![]() This is an attempt to prevent fraud by sending a paper check to the correct person instead of sending an electronic payment to the wrong person’s account. In order to check the status of your tax return, visit My Alabama Taxes and select “Where’s My Refund?” To maintain security, the site requires you to enter your SSN, the tax year and your expected refund amount.Īnother thing to note with Alabama is that even if you filed for direct deposit of your refund, the state may send your refund as a physical check. You can expect your Alabama refund in eight to 12 weeks from when it is received. Tennessee has phased out tax on income from dividends and investments and New Hampshire has proposed legislation to do the same. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax regular wages and income. Note that Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. Below is a run down of how you can check your refund status in each state that collects an income tax. Other states may also require your date of birth, the year of the return, your filing status or your zip code. These two things will be enough for you to check in some states. Most states ask you to round your return to the nearest whole number but some states, like Vermont, will ask for the exact amount of your refund. If you file a joint return, use whichever ID number appears first on the return.Īlmost all states will also require you to provide the amount of your refund. One common type is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). If you do not have a SSN, most states allow you to use a few different types of ID. The first important information is your Social Security number (SSN). ![]() In general though, there are two pieces of information that you will need in order to check on your refund. Each state uses a slightly different system to let taxpayers check their tax refund status. Most of the time, state returns are processed faster than federal returns. ![]() Any state tax refund you have coming can come at a variety of times, depending on what state you filed in. ![]() Goranson explains that blessings and kisses have been intertwined in the human psyche for all of history. Their juxtaposition with “Ave Maria” is reminiscent of the 1719 use of “x” in Robinson Crusoe, in which Daniel Defoe explicitly writes that crosses mean blessings. “The x’s in White’s letter could possibly mean kisses, but it is more likely they meant blessings,” he says. “I am with many a xxxxxxx and many a Pater noster and Ave Maria, Gil White.” No one knows when “x” was first written to mean a kiss, but The Oxford English Dictionary says the earliest known use was by British curate and naturalist Gilbert White in a 1763 letter that ended: “So much was packed into that symbol of a kiss… it has become a kind of collective memory. ![]() “The kiss became, ‘If I kiss that man, then this is the man I love and want,’” says Danesi. It said to family and society: ‘You can’t tell me whom I should marry.’” This may have been particularly true for women, who had less say than men over the choice of a lover. “Romantic love becomes an obsession, and the kiss became empowering. “Symbols have a way of jumping from one domain to another,” says Danesi, who wrote The History of the Kiss: The Birth of Popular Culture, “and it’s a small step to come from sealing a letter to sealing a love affair.” He speculates that “x” underwent a conversion in an act of medieval romantic rebellion. (My mother also taught me to write SWAK across the flaps of envelopes before mailing letters.) During that period, it was customary to close books with a kiss, and oaths of political and economic fealty between kings and their vassals were “sealed with a kiss”- an early antecedent of the acronym SWAK, which became popular during World War I for soldiers to imprint on their letters home. From there it became the signature of choice in the Middle Ages, a time when few people could write and documents were sealed with an x embossed in wax or lead. Once it was a sacred symbol, the “x” came to mean “faith and fidelity,” says Marcel Danesi, a professor of linguistic anthropology and semiotics at the University of Toronto. “So both orientations of crossed lines-X shape and the more-or-less lower case T shape-took on religious significance among Christians.” No one knows exactly how this happened: One story is that in 312 CE the Roman Emperor Constantine saw the chi-rho in a dream in which God told him “in this sign you will conquer.” Constantine went on to legalize Christianity, which later became the official religion of Rome. When Christianity came along, it co-opted the “x.” “In Christian texts, one abbreviation of the Greek word Christos-meaning messiah-used the first two Greek letters of Christos, chi (X) and rho (P), combined into one shape,” says Stephen Goranson, a historian of religion at Duke University who studies the etymology of symbols and words. A simple, easily drawn shape, it entered the Western alphabet as the ancient Phoenician letter samekh for the consonant sound “s.” In early Hebrew it was the letter taw and makes an appearance in the Book of Ezekiel as a mark set “upon the foreheads” to distinguish the good men of Jerusalem from the bad. ![]() Then there were auditoryĪssociations such as the similarity in the pronunciation of “x” and “kiss.” But it very quickly became apparent that x most likely evolved from the written tradition. I found visual explanations: that “x” resembles a kiss “o” looks like an embrace and together “x” and “o” form a kiss on a face. The Internet abounds with origin theories of all kinds. Suddenly I became curious about where these symbols come from, these ur-emoticons that English speakers of all faiths sprinkle so liberally across our correspondence. ![]() I never thought about it myself until she passed away in 2012 and I began to emit streams of “x’s” and “o’s” like a binary love code in the countless personal and professional emails that consume much of my daily life. So deeply embedded was this English-language tradition that I am sure it never crossed her mind-she was a proper Jewish mom as well as the executive director of the Jewish Community Center-that the “x” might have anything to do with a cross. Yet at the same time, my mother taught me to write “x” and “o”-a kiss and a hug-after my signature. My father transformed the expression “cross your fingers” into “star your fingers” because, as he used to explain, crosses are Christian and thus not for Jews. I grew up in a family wary of anything overtly Christian. ![]() The legend of Immortan Joe captured the hearts of many, and they traveled to The Citadel to seek a better life. Immortan Joe refurbished the abandoned lead mine and turned it into The Bullet Farm under the rule of his former gang mate, Major Kalashikov, now known as The Bullet Farmer. Dubbed The Gas Town, it was run by the captured fat man who tipped Immortan about the location of the aquifer, and he became known as The People Eater, reckoner human calculator. He reclaimed the Oil Refinery up North and used it to produce guzzoline for his armada. Meanwhile, Joe rebuilt the aquifer into The Citadel and scoured the land for resources. The harshness of that world blurred the edges of reality. The construction of the Citadel and the building of his legacy He was immediately dubbed "Immortal man" or 'Immortan Joe' by his gang. On the third day the band underneath lost all faith and decided to leave. But then they saw familiar members hung from the top one after another. The gang on the ground thought someone made it inside that tower. As they were doing so it came to their attention that there was a fight inside the main tower.Īs the day went on the main tower started to burn. As Moore's men were attacking up top, the defenders retreated to another tower and blew up the pipes connecting the towers. The remaining gang members on the ground started an all-out assault, and while the aquifer defenders were busy shooting them from atop, a surprise attack came from the people who climbed up. The lizard eventually made its way up and the attackers climbed up the rope at night. The lizard was reluctant to climb at first so one of the members of Moore's gang cut off his own finger and tied it to a stick hanging in front of the the lizard's head to encourage the reptile to climb up. He strapped a rope to a lizard that was going to climb up the wall and allow the gang to climb it. Joe Moore, inspired by a Persian (Maratha in actuality) general Tanaji Malusare, decided to sneak into The Citadel and take it over in a similar fashion. His victory over the Aquifier earned him the title of "Immortan Joe" ![]() He also sent out disposable members of his gang to climb and inspect The Great Rock, but all of them were shot down. He decided to look for water elsewhere.Ĭolonel Joe Moore sent scouts to look for water, but what they found was a derelict oil refinery and an abandoned lead mine. His offer was turned down and his gang was attacked. After learning about the location of the aquifer, Colonel Joe Moore tried to bargain with its inhabitants, wanting to trade the captured women for water. He sent out a war party that found a survivor (who later became the People Eater) with knowledge of the location of a massive aquifer built into a series of natural stone pillars in the wasteland, sitting on a lake of fresh water. Out in the wasteland, Colonel Joe Moore spotted a group of rogue MFP officers ( Roop & Charlie) attacking a group of people. Immortan Joe in his younger years, alongside Major Kalashnikov and the People Eater Eventually he and his gang entered the wasteland, where he would learn about a massive aquifer plant later known as The Citadel. ![]() With that, his idea of bringing back society willingly took a dark turn. With each battle the gang grew stronger by slaughtering the leaders of other gangs and taking the women. His gang included henchmen dubbed Major Kalashnikov and a strategist: Deepdog. He formed a biker gang terrorizing the people after the fall. Immortan Joe - formerly known as Colonel Joe Moore - was a veteran of the Oil Wars and a hero of the Water Wars. The mode is reasonably challenging, especially due to the variety of golfers you end up using, but in the end, it's also fairly short. Unfortunately, this means that anyone fond of using their self-created golfers will end up spending just as much time improving the pro players. A fairly interesting addition to the lineup, Team Tour has your created golfer leading a team through a series of matches, and by defeating an opponent, you can add him to your team lineup. New to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is the Team Tour. While Tiger Woods 07 only adds a few new features to the creation process, the new gameplay modes take full advantage of these custom golfers. At first, your created player will barely be able to hit the ball 70 yards, but once he gains some experience, you'll be outplaying Tiger Woods with ease. You can then take the golfer into the game to compete against the pros in a nod to the popularity of RPG features, these created players then gain experience points as they are used, allowing the player to upgrade their stats. One can spend hours just perfecting the ideal face and swing for the golfer. Everything from the shape of the eyes to the number of moles can be customized, allowing the gamer to create almost anyone he could imagine. For those unfamiliar with the feature, Create-A-Pro allows the player to create his own custom golfer from scratch, in unbelievable detail. Tiger Woods' Create-A-Pro feature seems to get more detailed with every year. Tiger Woods 07 should have enough difficulty to appeal to rookies and veterans alike. For those who prefer a challenge, you can ratchet the difficulty meter to maximum, turn off all the assisting features and play bare-bones. Even players who have never played a game of golf before should be able to pick up and play, and after a few rounds, be able to compete with the best the AI has to offer. ![]() Everything seems just a little bit easier, the adjustable difficulty mode means that players who are having trouble out-shooting the pros can balance things in their favor, and a series of tutorial videos is available to teach players about the new and old features. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is arguably the series' most friendly introduction for new players in a while. Despite the fact that this means skipping some of Tiger Woods' beautiful animations, it can be a godsend in long matches. One particularly welcome addition is the Speed Shot feature, which allows players to speed up animations or even skip some entirely, making gameplay go by notably quicker than the previous iteration. While this change won't make much of a difference to new players, vets may be glad to have the choice. The alternative shot style allows the player to use the right analog stick to aim their shots instead of using the left analog stick to do everything. Players also have a choice between standard and alternative shot styles for their golfers. The difficulty can now be further adjusted, making things easier for beginners, or allowing handicaps to be set for experienced golfers. Most of the familiar modes have returned, although Rivals has been dropped in favor of the new Team Tour mode. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much to improve upon that tradition of excellence, either.Īll in all, not much has changed from the series' last offering. The Tiger Woods series has always been held up as an example of top-notch golf, and the latest iteration in the franchise, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, looks to continue the series' proud lineage. From Golf back on the NES onward, golf games have always held an interest for me that the actual sport just can't seem to work up. Muse Paintbar is meant for those with no experience, and while you can buy a 3-pack of classes or more at discount, they don’t seem to have a track for advancement to students with experience wishing more difficult paintings. Each of the example paintings hung on the walls is a careful balance of an interesting topic but not too advanced for beginners in a single evening’s class. The class is well organized and our instructor, who thankfully had a microphone, was easily heard, painting each step along with the class, unlike our recent experience making pottery in Brookline where the instructor dumped 10 steps on us before we touched the clay. The class alternates between instruction from a single teacher, and recent pop music as you try to paint. When you arrive you’re given a smock and a seat at a work table with a blank canvas and palette of colors. Our night, a Monday, drew more than 30 people, which only filled half of the place. (There is no regular bar seating.) Classes take place 7 days a week, giving you an option for a slow Monday, and allowing you to pick from their website which work you are most interested to paint. I’d just been to review PopUp Painting in London, a similar event, and am glad to say that we enjoyed Muse Paintbar more, because it was better organized and led, hosted in a space wholly dedicated to painting classes. At Patriot Place, you’ll find red wine, white wine, beer, and snacks including a hummus platter, chips and dip, baby carrots and dip, pretzels, chicken fingers, pizza, meatballs, and ice cream. Admission includes a drink but of course they hope that you’ll buy more. At the end of the class, if you like your work you can take it home with you. You learn to paint with acrylics, onto either a 16″ x 20″ canvas, wine glasses, or mason jars. You pay an inexpensive fee and join a class with a twist of party experience. Muse Paintbar has 11 locations just in New England, with more beyond, and we were grateful to be invited to their location at Patriot Place in Foxboro, Massachusetts for this review. We plan to go again. What’s better than going to a bar?
